Powerful Weapon of Prayer - Ex-Satanist reveals its importance
I know this is long--not like me to post long things---but it is a powerful testimony that someone sent me. It is the transcripted words (with some editing I have done for grammatical correctness) of a man who was raised in Satanism and was delivered, and now speaks to churches, educating them about the power we have in Jesus Christ against demonic forces... I learned some new things here...(feel free to discard anything that you truly believe could not be of God in this man's account. There is still marvelous and strengthening truth in this for us in these last days.)
Powerful Prayer
The following testimony about a former Satanist, who told about the power of "breakthrough" prayer of Christians, was forwarded to me, and I send it to you for your consideration. If nothing else, I hope it encourages you to press into prayer, and not let the enemy sidetrack you. As you break through in prayer and intimacy with the Lord, it creates an open heaven over you, and you carry His Presence with you, to transform the world around you! Apostle Paul wrote to the Corinthians and said, I don't want you to be ignorant of spiritual things, lest the devil take advantage of you. There are some things, if we don't care to know about them, the devil will take advantage of us.
I want to share with you from a testimony of someone who was saved-- someone who had been serving the devil. And when that man gave his testimony, it so challenged me; I did not want to believe it. I had to go ten days before the Lord in fasting, asking Him, "Lord, is this true?" And it was at that time the Lord began to teach me what happens in the spiritual realm when we pray. This man was born after his parents dedicated themselves to Lucifer. When he was still in the womb, they made so many rituals dedicating him to serve Lucifer. When he was four years old, he began to exercise his spiritual power. And his parents began fearing him. When he was six years, his father surrendered him to the witches to go and be trained. And by ten years, he was doing great things in the kingdom of the devil. The normal witches feared him. He was still a young boy, but he was so terrible in the things he did. He grew up to be a young man in his twenties with so much bloodshed on his hands. Killed at will. He had the ability to go out of his body through transcendental meditation, and he could levitate. Sometimes his body would lift off the ground and stay in the air, and sometimes he could go into a trance, and come out of his body. His body would remain behind, and he would go out into the world. This is called astral-travelling. And this guy was used by Satan to destroy so many churches, to break down so many churches and to destroy so many pastors. One day, he was assigned to destroy a church that was so full of prayer. There were so many divisions in this church, and so many confusions. And he began to work on this church. But at that time, the pastor called a fast for the whole church. So the church began to fast, and during the fasting there was a lot of repentance and a lot of reconciliation. And the people came together, and they began to pray for the work of the Lord in their midst. They continued interceding and crying to God to have mercy and to intervene in their lives. As the days went by, this man was coming again and again with demon spirits against this church. But there was a word of prophecy that came telling the Christians to rise up and to wage warfare against the powers of darkness that were attacking the church. So one day, this man leaves his body in his room and goes astral-travelling. And leads a mighty force of demonic spirits against this church. Now this is his testimony. He was moving in the spirit in the air over the church and they were trying to attack, but there was a covering of light over the church. And suddenly, there was an army of angels that attacked them and there was fighting in the air, and all the demons fled, but he was arrested. Arrested by whom? The angels! And he saw himself being held by about six angels, and they brought him down through the roof right before the altar. And there he was. And the people were praying. They were deep in prayer in spiritual warfare, binding and breaking and casting out. And the pastor was on the platform leading the prayer and the warfare. And the Spirit of the Lord spoke to the pastor, and said, the yoke has been broken, and the victim is there before you. Help him through deliverance. And he opened his eyes and he saw this young man, who had collapsed there. His body was with him! He was in his body! The young man says he doesn't know how his body joined him. He had left it in his house. But there he was in his body, and he didn't know how he had entered in except the angel had carried him through the roof. Now these things are difficult to believe, but the pastor silenced the church and told the church what the Lord had told him and asked the young man, who are you? The young man was trembling, and the demons began coming out of him. So they prayed for deliverance, and afterwards, he began to share his life. That young man has now come to the Lord and is now an evangelist, preaching the Gospel. Now he is being used by the Lord mightily in setting other people free in the ministry of deliverance.
One night, I went to a dinner, and the sole reason I went is that someone told me about this young man, and I was so curious to see him. So I sat at that dinner and some time in the evening, this man was given the chance to give his testimony. He talked about so many things. Sometimes he cried because of the things he did, and then as he finished, he made an appeal. There were so many pastors in that room. He said, "I appeal to you, pastors. Please teach the people how to pray. The people who don't pray can be taken in anything, in anything by the devil, and there are ways that the enemy exploits their lives and their prayers. People who don't know how to pray, they literally pray, and the enemy knows even how to exploit their prayers. We're going to talk about that." And he also said to the pastors to teach the people how to use the spiritual armour that God provides. Then he began to give a testimony of how he used to lead expeditions into the air. He would go with other satanic agents and lots of demon spirits into the air. It was like a shift-- you've got to go and work your shift.
So regularly he had times when he had to go and wage war in the heavenlies. And he said that in the heavenlies, in the spiritual realm, if the land is covered under the blanket of darkness, that blanket is so thick, it is like a rock. It covers the whole area. These spirits are able to go on top of this as well as below this blanket. And from that level, they influence the events on earth. Both evil spirits and human agents that are serving the devil, when they leave their shifts they go down on earth at the points of covenant, even waters or on the land at the points of covenant for refreshing of their spirit. And how do they refresh their spirit? By the sacrifices that people give at these altars. They could be sacrifices in open witchcraft; they could be sacrifices in bloodshed of all types, including abortion, including warfare and human sacrifices and animal sacrifices. They could be sacrifices of sexual immorality where people go into sexual perversions and all kinds of promiscuity. And that act services the strength of these powers. Many are the different types of sacrifices. He talked about lots of things, which really troubled my mind. He said when they are up there and the Christians begin to pray on earth, the prayers of the Christians appear to them in three forms.
All prayers appear like smoke that is rising up into the heavens, and he says that some prayers appear like smoke and they go meandering and disappear in the air. He says that the people who normally pray like that and there prayers disappear are people who have sin in their lives and they are not willing to deal with it. Their prayers are so weak, they are blown and they disappear in the air. And he said there are others whose prayers are like smoke that rises up until it reaches this rock, but it does not break through the rock. He says, usually these are those who try to purify themselves, but they lack the faith in what they are doing as they pray. And usually they ignore the other keys to use-- areas that they need to put together in prayer. He says that the third type of prayer is like smoke that is filled with fire. As it rises up, it is so hot that as it reaches the rock, the rock begins to melt like wax and it pierces that rock and goes through, and he said many times people begin to pray and their prayers are like the first type of prayer. As they continue praying, their prayers change and become like the second prayer. As they continue praying, suddenly there is such fire that is filling their prayers. And their prayers become so powerful, they pierce through the rock. And he said, many times would they notice the prayers of the saints changing and coming very close to the state of fire, so they communicate to other spirits on earth and they tell them, "Distract that person from prayer. Stop them praying. Pull them out." And many times so many Christians yield to these distractions. Others are pressing through. They are repenting. They are allowing the Word to build their spirit up. Faith has been building up. Their prayers are becoming more focused. Then the devil sees their prayers are gaining strength and the distractions begin. Telephones ring. Sometimes the telephone rings, and you/we, in the middle of very, very intense prayer think you can go to answer the phone and then come back and continue praying. When you come back, you go back to the beginning. And that's what the devil wants. Other kinds of distractions come your way, even if it means he would touch your body and bring some pain somewhere. Even if it means making you hungry and you want to go to the kitchen and fix something to eat. As long as they can get you out of that place, they have defeated you. And he said to the pastors to teach the people to set aside some time, not for just some casual kind of praying. They can do that the rest of the day. Once in a day, they should have a time when they are focusing wholeheartedly on God, nothing distracting them. And if people resist in this kind of prayer but allow themselves to be inspired in the spirit and keep going and keep going, something happens in the spirit. The fire touches that rock, and it melts. And this man said, when the melting begins, it is so hot, no demon spirit can stand it. No human spirit can stand it. They all flee. They all run away. There comes an opening in the spiritual realm. And as soon as this comes, all this trouble in prayer stops. The person who is praying on the ground just feels like prayer is suddenly so smooth, so enjoyable, and so powerful and intense. I've discovered at that moment, we normally lose consciousness of time and other things-- not that we become disorderly. God takes care of our time. But it is like you lay down everything, and you hook up with God.
This man said that when the prayers go through, from that moment there can be no resistance at all, and the person praying will continue as long as he wants. There is no resistance that can stop him, and after he finishes praying, the hole remains open, and that people, when they rise out of their place of prayer, and they walk out, this open hole moves along with them. They are no longer operating under the blanket. They are operating under open heavens. In that state, the devil cannot do what he wants against them. The presence of the Lord is like a pillar from heaven resting on their lives. They are protected, and there is so much power inside that pillar that as they move around, that presence touches other people. It discerns what the enemy has done in other people. And as they talk to people and those people are standing with them, they come inside this pillar. And as long as they stay inside that pillar, all the bondages of the enemy weaken. So when these people who have this spiritual breakthrough share Jesus Christ with sinners, the resistance is low. It is so easy to bring them to the Saviour. When they pray for the sick or pray about things, the Presence, which is there, makes all the difference. This man said the devil hates such people. And he said if there are places where prayer is regularly being prayed through like that, the Presence comes upon that place and does not leave. So even the people who don't know God, when they come into this place, suddenly all the bondages are weakened. If someone cared to just minister to him or her patiently and with love, the Spirit of God, who is present, can easily pull them through, not by power or by might but by the obedience to the Spirit. And he said, if no one bothers about these people, they come into his presence, they feel convicted, they begin to debate whether to yield or not, but if they are not pulled through, when they walk away from this place, bondages get stronger. The devil tries his best not to allow them to come back into such an environment.
You can imagine we were all seated looking at this man. He was telling us the things he used to do and what he used to see. Then he told us what they would do to people who have broken through in prayer. He said they marked such people-- they studied such people. They dug up everything they could find about such people. So they knew their weaknesses, and when someone overcomes them in prayer and breaks through, they communicate with other spirits and say, target him with this and with this and with this. These are his weaknesses. So when this person walks out of the prayer closet, the spirit of prayer is upon him, the presence is upon him, his spirits are high, the joy of the Lord is his strength. As he moves the enemy tries to bring on those things that can distract him from focusing on the Lord. If his weakness is in the area of temper, then the enemy is going to cause people to do things, which can make him really angry. And if he is not sensitive to the Holy Spirit, and he allows himself to go into the temper, he takes his eyes off the Lord. He gets angry, he feels so furious, and after a few minutes later, he wants to put that behind him and move along in the joy of the Lord, but he doesn't feel it anymore. He tries to feel good again; he doesn't feel any good again. Why? As he yielded to the temptation, they worked hard to close the door upstairs. And once they restore the rock, the presence is cut off. The person does not cease being a child of God. But that extra anointing that goes on his life, that presence that could manage to do things without his manipulating anything, is just cut off. These demonic powers seek out where the weaknesses are. If it is in the temptation to sexual sin, the enemy will prepare people, events, something that will suddenly draw out that passion to go towards that temptation. If that man yields to this temptation and opens up his mind to receive these thoughts and entertains them, when he is through with everything and wants to move again in the anointing, he just discovers it is no longer there.
Maybe you say that's not fair. Just remember what the Bible says-- put on the helmet of salvation. Put on the breastplate of righteousness. We normally do not see the position, the place of these weapons of warfare. But remember what Jesus told us to pray towards the end of the Lord's Prayer, "Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one." Every time you have a breakthrough in prayer, as you come to the end, remember you are still a weak human being. Remember you have not yet been perfected. As the Lord says, we must say, "Lord, I've enjoyed this time of prayer, but when I walk out into this world, lead me not into temptation. Don't allow me to walk into the devil's trap. I know the enemy is setting a trap out there. I don't know what form it is going to take. And I know I am still weak in certain areas. If I am just put in the right place, I will yield to that. Protect me, Lord. When you see me turning that corner where the trap is, just cause me to turn to the other side. Intervene, O Lord. Don't allow me to move by just my own strength and ability. Deliver me from the evil one." God is able to do that. He is able. That is why sometimes things happen, and all you need to say is, "Thank you, Jesus." That's why Apostle Paul wrote in the book of Thessalonians and said to thank God in everything for that is the will of God in Christ for you. Some things are not good. They are painful, and we wonder why God would allow it, but if only we knew what He is saving us from, we would thank Him. When we learn to trust the Lord, we just thank Him in everything.
Beloved, I don't know whether to go deeper because I do not want to start something I cannot finish. Let me just try to take one step forward. This man said that when prayer breaks through like that, the answer would always come. He said he does not know a case where prayer broke through and the answer did not come. He said the answer always came, but in most cases, it would never get to the person who asked. Why? Battle in the heavenlies. He says as long as they succeed in cutting off the open heavens and the rock is restored, they watch this person-- they are waiting because they know the answer is definitely coming. And then this man spoke something that really shook my faith! It is because of the next part he shared that I went into fasting ten days to say, "Lord, is this true? Can you prove it to me?"
This man said that every Christian has got an angel serving that Christian. Now we know the Bible says angels are ministering spirits to us. He said that when people pray, the answer comes in the hands of the angel. The angel brings the answer like we can read it in the book of Daniel. Then he said something really tough: if the one who prays knows of the spiritual armour and is clothed with it, the answer comes by an angel who is also clothed in full armour. If the one who prays doesn't care about spiritual armour, their angels come without spiritual armour. These could be Christians who don't care about what kind of thoughts come into their minds. They don't fight the battle of their minds. Their angels come without the helmet. Whatever spiritual weapon you ignore on earth, the angel doesn't have it as he serves you. In other words, our spiritual armour is not protecting our physical bodies-- it's protecting our spiritual exploits. This man said, when the angel is coming, they would focus and look at him and notice the areas, which are not covered, and those are the areas they would attack. If he has no helmet, they would shoot at his head. If he has no breastplate, they would shoot at his chest. If he has no shoes, they would make a fire so that he is walking in the fire. Now I am just repeating what this man said. Actually, we asked him, "Can angels feel fire?" Do you know what he said to us? Remember this is a spiritual realm. These are spirits dealing with spirits. The battle is intensive, and when they overpower an angel of God, the first thing they target is the answer he is carrying, and they take it from him-- that is what they give through the cults, the witchcraft. People say, I got this because of witchcraft. Remember what the Bible says in the book of James? All good things come from God. So where does the devil get the things he gives to his people? Some people who cannot have children may go to a witch doctor and Satanists, and they get pregnant! Who gave them that baby? Is Satan a creator? NO! He steals from those who don't pray to the end. The Word says, "Pray without ceasing," and when the Son of Man comes, will He find faith? Will He find you still there waiting? Or will you have given up, the enemy having stolen what you have prayed for? Then this man said that they are not satisfied with just stealing the answer. They are also interested in detaining the angel, and they start fighting him. He said that sometimes they succeed in holding and binding the angel, and when that happens, the Christian is a victim on earth. They can do anything with that Christian because he is totally left without ministry in the Spirit. I said to him, "Do you mean an angel can be held in captivity by demonic forces?" This man did not even know the scriptures at the time he was saying all this. He did not know very many scriptures. He was just sharing his experiences. He answered that they wouldn't hold the angel too long because as other Christians prayed elsewhere, reinforcement would come, and the angels would go free. If the Christian responsible did not pray through, he remains a captive. Then the enemy sends his own angel as an angel of light to this person, and that is where the deception comes in false visions and false prophecies. False leadership, I mean leading, guidance in the spirit, making wrong decisions of all types. And many times this person is open to all kinds of attack and bondages.
I asked the Lord. I left that dinner so troubled, so troubled. I said, "Lord, I don't want even to try and believe this. It removes all my confidence, my security." When I went to seek the Lord, it was ten days later that the Lord did two things. He confirmed the things I had heard, and opened my mind to see a lot more of what this man could not tell us that happens in the spiritual realm. Secondly, he led me to see what we are supposed to do as the things are happening so that we are not overcome but that we can overcome. And we need to know three things and really come to terms with these three things.
One: Operate with the weapons of our warfare. The Bible calls them the armour of God. It is not our armour-- it is God's armour. When we use it, we allow God to fight on our behalf.
Two: Understand the relationship of the ministering spirits, the angels, to our spiritual lives. Be sensitive to what is happening in our hearts as a leading to what needs to be happening in the spirit concerning us. That brings us to the third thing:
Three: The Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is not supposed to come as our servant, serving us and bringing things to us. He does not run to and fro to the Father to tell Him what we need. That is the work of angels. But He stands by our side. Doing what? Guiding us, teaching us, leading us, and helping us to pray the right way. When these things are happening in the spiritual realm, He tells us. Sometimes He wakes you up in the night and says, "Pray." You say, "No! My time is not yet come." He says, "Pray now." Why? He sees what is happening in the spirit. Sometimes He says, "Tomorrow-- fasting!" You say, "Oh, no, I'll start on Monday!" But He understands what is happening in the spiritual realm. We should learn to be sensitive to the Holy Spirit. He guides us in the paths of righteousness. Beloved, we've got to stop here. Maybe tomorrow morning, we can talk about how we can pray through, knowing the battles in the spirit and how we can break through, how we can maintain our breakthrough once we have scored it. Once we learn this, it becomes enjoyable. Then we learn one thing: the battle is not ours-- the battle is the Lord's!

First Question:
You are participating in a race. You overtake the second person. What position are you in?
Answer: If you answered that you are first, then you are absolutely wrong! If you overtake the second person and you take his place, you are second!
Try not to mess up in the next question. To answer the second question, don't take as much time as you took for the first question.
Second Question: If you overtake the last person, then you are...?
Answer: If you answered that you are second to last, then you are wrong again. Tell me, how can you overtake the LAST person?!
You're not very good at this are you?
Third Question: Very tricky math! Note: This must be done in your head only. Do NOT use paper and pencil or a calculator. Try it.
Take 1000 and add 40 to it.
Now add another 1000.
Now add 30.
Add another 1000.
Now add 20.
Now add another 1000.
Now add 10. What is the total? Scroll down for answer.
Did you get 5000? The correct answer is actually 4100.
Don't believe it? Check with your calculator! Today is definitely not your day.
Maybe you will get the last question right?
Mary's father has five daughters: 1. Nana, 2. Nene, 3. Nini, 4. Nono. What is the name of the fifth daughter?
Answer: Nunu? NO! Of course not. Her name is Mary. Read the question again!

Lessons on Living From Moses: The Attitude of Ingratitude
And the people murmured against Moses, saying, "What shall we drink?"
The Attitude of Ingratitude
Hot springs and cold springs are found side by side in some parts of Mexico. Because of the convenience of this natural phenomenon, women often bring their laundry to such places so they can boil their clothes in the hot springs and then rinse them in the cold ones. A tourist who was watching this procedure commented to his Mexican guide, "I imagine they think Mother Nature is pretty generous to supply such ample, clean, hot and cold water here side by side for their free use." The guide replied, "No, SeƱor, there is much grumbling because she supplies no soap."
Ingratitude is not limited to Mexican peasants; Israel demonstrated the same attitude. God had just performed some awe-inspiring miracles for His people’s benefit. He had slain the first born of Egypt so that Pharaoh would free the Israelites. He had provided a pillar of cloud by day and a pillar of fire at night to guide their journey. He had opened the Red Sea for them to cross and brought it crashing back on the Egyptian army pursuing them. Yet when they hit their first snag, instead of trusting God, they turned to complaining.
Times of need are times for praying, not complaining. Complaining says to God, "You aren’t taking very good care of me." Prayer says to God, "I may not understand what’s happening, but I trust You to take care of me."
Do you feel life is treating you unfairly? Are you tempted to complain? Try this. Take a notebook and list some of the marvelous things God has already done in your life, such as providing your salvation, a measure of health, a supportive family and an inspired Bible. Then look with confidence that He will provide for your situation today as well.

The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of our God stands forever.
The Eternal Word
Very few things are permanent, no matter how solid they seem to be. Japanese scholar Chikaosa Tanimoto is now saying that the Sphinx, which has stood immovable on the Giza Plateau outside of Cairo, Egypt, for more than 4,500 years, is destined for destruction within the next 200 years. Because of erosion created by pollution and the forces of nature, the structure eventually will disintegrate into a heap of rubble. Other ancient monuments such as the great pyramids—Cheops, Chephren and Myceriuns—which were supposedly built to last forever, are also showing signs of crumbling. Given sufficient time, they also will return to the dust from which they came.
The same, however, cannot be said of God's Word. Even though portions such as the Book of Job and the five books of Moses (Genesis through Deuteronomy) are nearly 4,000 years old, they are as relevant today as the day they were written. Because the Bible deals with the nature of man and the love of God, it will always be applicable to man's need. Technology changes, cultures vary, fads come and go. But human nature stays the same, and the Bible always has the answer for man's deepest need.
Nor will Scripture ever lose its validity. The Bible is absolute truth, and truth doesn't change with time. Just as two plus two is four today, it was a thousand years ago and it will be a thousand years from now. The sins that offended the holiness of God when the Bible was written, such as adultery, homosexuality, lying and stealing, are just as sinful and offensive to a holy God today.
Other things may last a long time, even thousands of years, but only God's Word is forever. Every word of Scripture that you make a part of your life is an investment in eternity. Study it, memorize it, apply it—and your life will never be out of date.

Lessons on Living from Daniel: You Can Depend on It
Scripture Reference: Daniel 7:1-3 Daniel 7:1–3
"In the first year of Belshazzar king of Babylon, Daniel had a dream and visions of his head while on his bed. Then he wrote down the dream, telling the main facts. Daniel spoke, saying, "I saw in my vision by night, and behold, the four winds of heaven were stirring up the Great Sea. And four great beasts came up from the sea, each different from the other."
You Can Depend on It
The following statements are taken from official documents, newspapers and magazines widely read during their day. Listen to what the "authorities" had to say:
"Anyone traveling at the speed of thirty miles per hour would surely suffocate" (1840).
"Electric lights are unworthy of serious attention" (1878).
"No possible combination can be united into a practical machine by which men shall fly" (1901).
"This foolish idea of shooting at the moon is basically impossible" (1926).
"To harness the energy locked up in matter is impossible" (1930).
It's obvious that the accuracy of all these "prophecies" left something to be desired. They were all based on human wisdom, and every one of them turned out to be false. Yet the prophecies Daniel shared were quite different. As he foresaw the rise of these four great beasts, which represent four earthly kingdoms, he was not drawing from his own knowledge and wisdom. Instead, he was relating a vision that was given to him directly from God. While people may disagree as to which kingdoms these beasts represent, the rock-solid assurance we have is that God is still in control. After describing these frightening apparitions, Daniel proceeded to describe a scene in heaven in which "the court shall be seated, and they shall take away his [the fourth and last beast's] dominion" (v. 26). If you are frightened by the future, take confidence in this: God is still on His throne and He always will be. The courts of heaven are in session and they will rule in our favor (v. 27). That's something you can bank on.
Fear God and you don't need to fear the future.

Lessons on Living from Daniel: No Man on Earth
The king answered and said, "I know for certain that you would gain time, because you see that my decision is firm: if you do not make known the dream to me, there is only one decree for you! For you have agreed to speak lying and corrupt words before me till the time has changed. Therefore tell me the dream, and I shall know that you can give me its interpretation." The Chaldeans answered the king, and said, "There is not a man on earth who can tell the king's matter; therefore no king, lord, or ruler has ever asked such things of any magician, astrologer, or Chaldean."
No Man on Earth
In the realm of fairy tales, straw is spun into gold, frogs turn into Prince Charmings, and pumpkins become royal coaches with mice for footmen. But these things are not possible in our world. Human beings in the real world have limitations.
Such limitations caused problems for the wise men of Babylon. King Nebuchadnezzar had dreamed a disturbing dream. Immediately he issued a call for his magicians, astrologers, sorcerers and Chaldeans. Not trusting these advisers to give him a true answer, however, he demanded they first tell him the dream and then interpret it. If they didn't, he said, they would be cut in pieces and their houses would be made an ash heap (2:5). Of course, their response was, "No ruler has ever asked such a thing!" This was an impossible request.
Often in our world we encounter things that are simply impossible. No man on earth can do them. Fortunately, as believers in Christ, our resources extend beyond earthly man; we have a Heavenly Father. God can do what no man can do. He said of Himself, "Behold, I am the Lord, the God of all flesh. Is there anything too hard for Me?" (Jer. 32:27).
Are you facing an impossible task today? Is there trouble in your life that is greater than any person on earth can resolve? Then look to God. He can do what others cannot. He'll do it for you.
God can do anything but fail.

Meaning of Wedding... parallel between jewish wedding and Christ/Church
From Chapter 2 -
(pictures of Jesus in Jewish weddings)
For nineteen hundred years, millions of readers have been inspired by the words and stories of Jesus written in the four Gospels of the New Testament. Jesus, here in His soothing words to the disciples, was alluding not to weddingsof our day but to the Jewish marriage customs of the First Century.
Jewish Weddings
Throughout the New Testament, God uses the analogy of a bride and groom to describe the relationship of Jesus to the church. As a groom pledged love to his bride, so Jesus committed His love to believers, pledged to return for us and promised us an eternity spent with Him.
The people of Jesus' day fully understood the betrothal and marriage customs of which He spoke. However, we in the twentieth century need to look at these ceremonies as they were during the first century, to fully understand the significance of Jesus' teachings. This understanding not only deepens our appreciation of God's love for us, it also gives us added insights to prophetic events and offers comfort in a time of world unrest.
Jewish Weddings First-Century Style
When a Jewish young man wished to marry a particular young woman, it was customary for the prospective groom's father first to approach the girl's father with the proposal of marriage. The two men would discuss this possible union including the price offered by the groom for the bride. If the girl's father agreed to the suggested amount, the two men sealed the agreement with a toast of wine.
The potential bride then entered the room whereupon the prospective groom proclaimed his love and asked her to be his bride. If the young woman wished to be his wife, she accepted his proposal at this time. The validation of the agreement made by the engaged couple was the presentation of a gift by the groom. He offered it in the presence of at least two witnesses. As he gave the gift, usually a ring, he said to his intended bride, "Behold you are consecrated unto me with this ring according to the laws of Moses and Israel."
Arrangements were also made right then concerning the terms of the marriage. A written contract listed the time, place, and size of the wedding as well as recording the dowry and terms of maintenance of the marriage. This binding document called a "ketubah" was kept in the bride's possession until the consummation of the marriage. Finally, this first part of a two-part ceremony was concluded by the toast of a glass of wine. The whole ceremony was called the "Shiddukhin," or engagement.
The Bible refers to the status of the prospective bride and groom as "espousal" or "betrothal." It meant that the two people were committed to each other as much as a married couple would be. The only parts of the marriage not yet completed were the formal "huppah" ceremony followed by their physical union. This betrothal was considered so binding that the only way to break it was by an actual bill of divorcement.
The groom then departed, but not before he assured his bride with the promises of building a home for her and returning to complete the marriage ceremony. He usually took a year to prepare her new home which often consisted of an addition built onto his own father's house.
The bride was expected to remain true to her groom as she prepared herself and her trousseau. She lived for the day of his return for her which would be heralded by a shout from the members of the wedding party. The impending return of her groom was to influence the bride's behavior during this interim espousal period.
The typical Jewish wedding took place at night. As soon as any members of the wedding spotted the moving torches signaling the groom's approach, their cry echoed through the streets, "The bridegroom is coming." The Wycliffe Bible Encyclopedia tells us, "Mirth and gladness announced their approach to townspeople waiting in houses along the route to the bride's house." Upon hearing the announcement, the excited bride would drop everything in order to slip into her wedding dress and complete her final personal preparations for marriage.
Rather than the groom entering the bride's house, the bride came out to meet him. The two, accompanied by their wedding party, returned together to the groom's home for the marriage ceremony. Following the public ceremony, the newlyweds entered their bridal chamber to be intimate with each other for the first time. After this union, the groom came out and announced to the wedding guests, "Our marriage is consummated."
Upon receiving the glad news, the wedding party began a "festive" seven-day celebration. The celebration lasted seven days only if this was the first marriage of a virgin girl. During this time the bride and the groom stayed with each other in seclusion. At the end of this time of privacy, the groom would present his unveiled bride to everyone in attendance. The newlyweds then joined in the wedding feast with the guests.
Jesus the Groom, Believers the Bride
In the Bible, God describes mankind by such unflattering examples as dumb sheep, foolish builders, temporary grass, vipers, ornate tombs, and blind leaders of the blind. Of course these and other disparaging descriptions fit us all too well. But, because of God's great love, He has other, quite compassionate ways to describe His feelings toward those who respond to His offer of salvation. He gives us such wonderful titles as sons, joint heirs with Christ, beloved, and children. One of the most tender terms used to describe us is "the bride, the Lamb's wife."
We just reviewed customs surrounding first-century Jewish betrothals and weddings. Now let's explore how these might relate to us as Christians today. Then let's seek to uncover the possible prophetic information presented in these ceremonies.
In eternity past, God the Father and God the Son planned our salvation. The Bible states concerning God, "He hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world." They settled the price long before the offer of salvation was given to us. We see God the Father as the "father of the groom" and because Jesus is actually the creative person of the Godhead, He stands in as the "the father of the bride."
How encouraging to realize this offer of love was not an afterthought of God. In fact, the Scripture refers to Jesus as "the lamb slain from the foundation of the world."
Jesus (in the form of a man) also steps into the role of the prospective groom. He offered Himself as the "price" for us, His intended bride. God actually says about us, "For ye are bought with a price."
After the plan was established, this loving proposal of salvation was given by Jesus to all mankind. God explains that everyone has the opportunity to respond to His offer. The Bible says, "For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved." "The heavens declare the glory of God and the firmament sheweth his handywork...There is no speech nor language where their voice is not heard." God also warns us that everyone understands who He is, so when people reject this proposal of love they are "without excuse."
When we answer "yes" to Jesus' offer of marriage, we become His betrothed. This arrangement is secured by the Holy Spirit, who protects the purchased bride until the return of Jesus. God says, "Ye were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise, which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of his glory." Our "engagement ring" of promise is none other than the Holy Spirit of God Himself.
Imagine, too, that just as the Jewish bride of long ago held the written promise of marriage commitment (ketubah) in her hand, so the prospective bride of Christ today holds the Bible in her hands. These written promises from Jesus describe His everlasting love and commitment.
On the night before His Crucifixion, Jesus drank a glass of wine with His followers. Lifting the cup He declared, "This cup is the New Testament in my blood, which is shed for you." Paul reminds us that Jesus commanded, "This do ye, as oft as ye drink it, in remembrance of me." Just as the groom in a Jewish marriage toasted his espoused bride, so we, by the communion cup, remember our betrothal to Jesus and the supreme price He paid for us.
Jesus said He must leave us in order to go back to His Father's house and prepare our new home. He promised also to return and gather all those who constitute His bride and transport them to this new home. This parallels exactly the ancient marriage customs!
For nearly two thousand years, Jesus has been in heaven "preparing a place for us." In God's time, Jesus will "descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God... We which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air: so shall we ever be with the Lord ." This catching away, called by many "the Rapture," is pictured in the Jewish marriage custom. The groom comes to the bride's home and brings her back to the wedding ceremony which is held at his father's house. This is the same house where he has also prepared a home for her.
Although we, the bride of Christ, have known for nearly two thousand years that Jesus would return for us, we have only been able to say, "He's coming back—maybe in my lifetime." "For our conversation is in heaven; from whence we look also for the Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ."
We have, of necessity, spent a portion of our lives involved in mundane matters since we didn't know the exact time of His return. However, just as the first-century bride reacted excitedly when she heard the shout across town announcing the impending arrival of her groom, so we as the listening bride of Christ should react when we hear the call, ahead of Jesus' arrival, "The bridegroom is coming."
The wedding celebration of seven days is carried on by the guests while the bride and groom spend this time in seclusion. At the end of the seven days the groom brings his bride out and her veil is removed for the first time, so all the guests can see her beauty.
This is a picture of the seven-year celebration in heaven which occurs simultaneously with the seven-year time of Tribulation transpiring on earth. The culmination of this time is described in the Bible. "Let us be glad and rejoice, and give honor to him: for the marriage of the Lamb is come, and his wife hath made herself ready. And to her was granted that she should be arrayed in fine linen, clean and white: for the fine linen is the righteousness of the saints. And he saith unto me, Write, Blessed are they which are called unto the marriage supper of the Lamb."
John Walvoord writes that "the marriage symbolism is beautifully fulfilled in the relationship of Christ to His Church. Revelation 19:6-9 is actually a prophetic hymn anticipating the marriage of the Lamb and His bride after He has begun His reign, and He will not begin His reign on earth until He has conquered the kings of the earth led by Antichrist."
The Jewish wedding, a perfect picture from beginning to end of Jesus' love for believers, should melt our hearts with appreciation. The prophetic picture is quite accurate, bringing us once again to see that God has woven many time clues in the Scriptures for us to discover.

Lessons on Living From Jeremiah
Jeremiah 13:23 Can the Ethiopian change his skin or the leopard its spots? Then may you also do good who are accustomed to do evil. A Change of Nature There's a legend about a scorpion, being a very poor swimmer, who asked a turtle to carry him on its back across the river. "Are you crazy?" exclaimed the turtle. "You'll sting me and I'll drown." "My dear turtle," laughed the scorpion, "if you were to drown, I'd go down with you. Now where's the logic in that?" "You're right," replied the turtle. "Hop on." The scorpion climbed aboard and halfway across the river gave the turtle a mighty sting. As they both sank to the bottom, the turtle inquired, "Do you mind if I ask you something? You said there is no logic in your stinging me. Why did you do it?" "It has nothing to do with logic," the drowning scorpion replied. "It's just my nature." God realized this problem with the sin nature also applied to His people. Just as an Ethiopian couldn't change the dark color of his skin or a leopard remove the spots from its pelt, neither could God's people truly do good by themselves. On the surface they could make their actions appear good, but the problem lay deeper. Just as skin color and fur markings are more than superficial adornments, the behavior of the Israelites reflected their sin nature. Their actions came out of a nature that was in rebellion against God. Many unbelievers today are just like that. They do what appear to be kind and gracious acts. They give generously of their finances and time. But underneath it all is still a rebellious attitude toward God that taints all their actions. Only when our nature is changed are we capable of truly doing something good, and that takes a saving relationship with Christ. Make sure that your relationship with the Lord is right, based on faith in Jesus Christ as Savior. Changing your outward behavior without your inward nature being transformed is just a cover-up. The substance is still the same. Only Jesus can make the inner man capable of doing what is truly good. Whitewash won't hold up a fence. Author: Woodrow Kroll

Like Gold - Lessons on Living from Job
Job 23:10 "But He knows the way that I take; when He has tested me, I shall come forth as gold." Like Gold It's a well-known fact that many people have become successful by compensating for personality or physical flaws. Winston Churchill, for example, stuttered as a youth yet became a great orator. Glenn Cunningham was so badly burned as a boy it was thought he would never walk again. He became, however, one of the world's great milers. George Bernard Shaw was so painfully shy that he found it difficult to talk with anyone. But Shaw forced himself to join organizations where he would have to speak before audiences. In each of these situations, it was the fiery trials that brought out the best in the person. As Job looked at the tests that God allowed in his life, he did not despair. Instead, he saw them as the instruments that would be used to bring about good. He knew that as the heat of a fiery furnace was needed to remove the dross from precious metal, so it took the cleansing flames of affliction to remove thoroughly the impurities from his life. He was confident that he would come forth not as a burned-up cinder but as a nugget of purest gold. God is not in the demolition business, but He does run a refinery. His purpose is not to destroy but to purify. The burning difficulties that test us are designed to remove the dregs that hinder us from serving Him with clean hands and a pure heart. He seeks not to ruin us but to increase our value. His desire is to separate from us anything that would detract from our worth and make us ever more useful in service to Him. If you are in the fiery furnace of affliction, take heart. God's hand is on the thermostat. He will allow the heat to do no more than remove the impurities. As you go in mixed with the dregs of this world, you will come forth pure and refined. Only precious ore is put in the Refiner's fire. Author: Woodrow Kroll

2010 - YEAR OF GREAT IMPACT!
to step in and set right all that is wrong. Rather, they are to
model the new heaven and new earth, and by so doing awaken
longings for what God will someday bring to pass.
-- Philip Yancey
Working Together
So we labored in the work; and half of them held the spears from the rising of the morning till the stars appeared. It was not until the year 539 B.C. that the Persian king Cyrus decreed that Jews and other captives could return to their homelands after a long Babylonian captivity. Wave after wave of expatriates made the journey back to a beleaguered land of promise. While yet captive, however, the news came to Nehemiah that the wall of Jerusalem had never been repaired since its destruction by Nebuchadnezzar. Brigands and robbers could attack the city at will. Nehemiah was distressed and became terribly burdened for his home town. He secured the necessary papers from Artaxerxes, the Persian king at that time, to return to his homeland and rebuild the wall around Jerusalem. In 444 B.C. Nehemiah arrived in Jerusalem and soon afterwards went by night on an inspection tour of the city walls. He elicited help to rebuild the ruined fortification both from residents and returnees. Volunteers quickly came to his side, but so did villains. Sanballat the Horonite and Tobiah the Ammonite heard that Nehemiah had come to rebuild the walls and "it grieved them exceedingly that there was a man come to seek the welfare of the children of Israel" (Nehemiah 2:10). At first Sanballat and Tobiah had only scorned the idea that these feeble Jews would fortify their city. But now they had become seriously alarmed. A conspiracy was formed of the Arabians, Ammonites, and Philistines of Ashdod. The enemies of Nehemiah were ready to attack Jerusalem before the fortifications could be completed. When Nehemiah heard the news of this conspiracy, he made proper response. Nehemiah 4:9 says, "Nevertheless, we made our prayer unto our God, and set a watch against them day and night, because of them." Nehemiah immediately turned to God in prayer but just as immediately made preparations to defend himself. This is the delicate balance between faith and works which is needed in each of our lives. With a trowel in one hand and a sword in the other the workmen continued to rebuild the walls. They would both watch and pray. The end result was summed up in Nehemiah's words, "So we labored in the work: and half of them held the spears from the rising of the morning till the stars appeared" (Nehemiah 4:21). With each one doing his part, the task was finished in record time to the glory of the Lord. The story could have been much different if, for example, those who worked complained that those who watched were not doing their fair share. Nehemiah’s workmen had to recognize they were all laborers together with God (1 Corinthians 3:9), as we must today if we are going to accomplish anything for God. The following parable illustrates this principle. A carpenter’s tools were having a conference. Brother Hammer was presiding, but the others informed him that he’d have to leave because he was too noisy. "All right," he said, "I'll go, but Brother Plane must withdraw too. There's no depth to his work. It’s always on the surface." Brother Plane responded, "Well, Brother Rule will also have to go. He's constantly measuring people as if he were the only one who's right." Brother Rule complained about Brother Sandpaper, saying, "He's always rubbing people the wrong way." In the midst of the discussion the Carpenter of Nazareth entered. He went to His workbench to make a pulpit from which He would preach the gospel. He used the hammer, the plane, the rule and the sandpaper. All were important in their own way. If Christians criticize one another, insult one another, and refuse to work together for God, the task of gleaning the whitened harvest fields will never be completed for His glory. Though differences remain between believers, let us always recognize who the true enemy really is. It is Satan. Each of us possesses different gifts and abilities, but none of us is unimportant in the work of the Lord. Let's defeat our common enemy this day. MORNING HYMN Author: Woodrow Kroll

With the balm of His counsel our strength to renew,
Let us do with our might what our hands find to do.
